Writing Retreat, Mindszentkálla, Hungary
Sunday 7th - Saturday 13th June 2026

Sunday 21st - Saturday 27th June 2026
We are excited to invite you to the second official Editing Cooperative Writing Retreat in Hungary, June 2026!
Over five days, we will take the pressures of everyday life out of your hands so you can focus on moving a writing project along. Come and be part of the Editing Cooperative’s community of practice under the sunny skies of Mindszentkálla, a village near Lake Balaton in an area known as the “Provence of Hungary.”
Kirsty will meet you in Budapest and take you on the train to the village; she will also advise you in organising your onward travel. There is an option to arrive a few days earlier in Budapest, where Kirsty will show you around some of the hidden spots in the city and discuss all things Hungarian history, politics, culture and society.
Food and drink will be provided, as well as optional excursions for lake swims, bike hire, movie nights, culminating on the final night with a bogrács, a traditional Hungarian wood-fired cauldron.
There is a maximum of six beds, and we hope to attract like-minded folk with similar interests. So come and join us to discuss writing, theory, data, and life around the campfire this summer!
We hope for the retreat to be a regular and affordable event for people to come together, write together and slow down together.
See the full brochure here, check out some pictures from the 2025 retreat below, and sign up before 31st January to secure your place!
Mindszentkálla is a village in Kali Medence, known as the ‘Provence of Hungary’, in the west of the country. The village lies on an old volcano, surrounded by rock formations and working vineyards. It is 5 miles from Lake Balaton, the largest freshwater lake in Europe.
There will be optional activities to explore the surrounding area like hikes, bike rides and lake swimming, but these will fit around the writing periods. The idea is to come away from the week having made a leap forward in your project in beautiful surroundings, while getting a taste of the slow, rural Hungarian way of life.
